Burakumin literally means simply "people of the village." In this context, however, the "village" in question is the separate community of outcasts, who traditionally lived in a restricted neighborhood, a sort of ghetto. The idea of Burakumin (often shortened to Buraku) is a leftover from Japan’s feudal era. Workers at the lowest end of the social ladder would be segregated into closed communities, and the word itself literally translates as ‘hamlet people’.
