An expired residence permit certainly does not allow you to stay or travel in the Schengen area by itself. There aren't any systematic border checks so you would not generally meet any border guard at the border between Norway and Sweden or at the airport when flying back to Sweden. If your visa is from a Schengen area country, it automatically allows you to travel to the other Schengen countries as well. If you have a valid residence permit from one of those Schengen countries, it is equivalent to a visa. You may need a national visa to visit non-Schengen countries. You will not be allowed to travel within the Schengen zone either.

If you want to stay longer you then need to register for a residence and/or work permit. Migrationsverket – the Swedish Migration Board – review the applications for Visitor´s permit and decide whether you get a yes or no. The biggest difference compared to a Schengen visa is that it´s the Swedish Migration Board – not the Swedish Embassy – that review the application and decide if you get a Visitor´s Permit or not. 3.4.1 Work permits for other relatives. Other family members (adult sons/daughters, parents, grandchildren, etc.) who wish to work in Sweden may apply for a work permit at a Swedish embassy abroad when they have received a firm offer of a job.
A Swedish residence permit allows the holder to stay in the country for longer than the 90 days a tourist or business visa allows. Non-EU citizens generally need to apply for a residence permit for Sweden before entering the country.

Such permits are decided in accordance with national Swedish rules. A visa is a permit that must be applied for before entering the Schengen area (including Sweden) for a short period. The aim of the visit may be to visit relatives or friends, a tourist visit, a business visit, to participate in a conference or just to travel through (transit). Citizens from EU Member States (with the exception of Denmark) and Schengen Associated countries (with the exception of Norway), and their family members, as well as people with Swedish residence permits, are allowed to enter Sweden at the conditions specified hereafter.

It depends on the residence permit you hold. I also assume you mean a short-term travel. If it is the Article 10 residence permit (must have the wording "Residence card of a family member of a Union citizen"), you can accompany your EEA family member on their trip to Ireland without a visa. UK Residence permit, endorsed in the passport or issued as a Biometrics card, must be valid for at least 90 days beyond the return date of the trip to the Schengen Area; C type visitor visa (see here) is only acceptable, if the applicant couldn’t apply from the country of residence since he/she has already left the residence country and resides consecutively more than 3 months in UK. As far as I understand this "visiting researcher" permit is different from a proper residence permit and more akin to a D-type "long stay" visa.
